Beard Oil and Beard Balm FAQ

What's the difference between beard oil and beard balm?

The main difference between beard oil and beard balm is the consistency. Neither one is more effective than the other. The main differences are that beard balm comes in a tin or a jar and is usually made with a base of something like beeswax and lanolin, while beard oil is usually in a bottle (sometimes with a dropper) and is made with a base of argan oil or jojoba oil, for example. Besides that, it really just comes down to preference. Why not try both?

How often should I use beard oil or beard balm?

The short answer? At least every time you wash your face. Just like how shampoo dries your hair out, washing your beard dries it out, too. The best time to apply beard oil or beard balm is right after you get out of the shower, while your beard is dry but still soft.

What are the benefits of beard oil and beard balm?

A good beard oil or beard balm is going to moisturize your skin and condition your facial hair. The best beard oils and beard balms are made with high-quality, natural ingredients, like lanolin, jojoba oil, and argan oil. These keep your beard soft and shiny and, most importantly, they moisturize the skin underneath it. Dry skin is the source of the dreaded "beard itch", and beard oil or beard balm keeps your skin from getting dry and itchy while conditioning the beard itself. Most beard oil and beard balm also contains some ingredients for scent as well. Finally, both beard oil and beard balm make styling your beard much easier, and help tame frizzy or bushy beards.

Does beard oil or beard balm help beard growth?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but neither beard oil nor beard balm will make your beard grow faster or thicker, at least not directly. According to the National Institutes of Health, biotin, a popular supplement claimed to promote hair growth, has not been proven particularly effective. The same is true for other ingredients, like saw palmetto oil and tea tree oil. However, beard oil and beard balm does promote healthy skin and hair follicles, and keeping the skin under your beard from itching will make you less likely to scratch it, leaving you with a thicker, fuller beard. So, while beard oil and beard balm won't your beard grow faster, it will help keep it looking thicker and fuller.
